Side-2-Side Drill
Equipment: 2 Baseballs
Set up:
Drill 1: Have the catcher set up behind the plate in their normal stance. Next, place a baseball 2 feet on either side of the plate. The catcher will now take turns reaching the glove towards each ball and then following the glove with the rest of the body into a blocking position. On the backhand the glove reaches with the thumb down, and then turns over as the body follows into position.
Drill 2: Basically the same drill, except we now need a coach or parent to short hop a throw to the sides of the plate, replacing the stationary baseballs from above. Mix it up. Throw some down the middle, some to the left, and some to the right. Don’t let the athlete cheat to the spots he thinks you are going to throw to.
Reps: 5 reps to each blocking location
